08/16/2017 01:00 AM Months after falling to Penguins, Capitals work to move past playoff letdown Sometimes, when a team falls short in a playoff run, it feels a bit melodramatic to throw around words like “devastation.” In the case of the Washington Capitals falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins – yet again – during the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs, a little melodrama almost seems appropriate. NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti caught up with a number of Capitals to reflect upon the past and look to the future, and while one must credit Nicklas Backstrom and others for saying the right things, you could also tell that the wounds haven’t fully healed just yet. “It should be about the team and how we lose as a team.
08/15/2017 02:10 PM Poll: Are the Wild a better team than they were last year? The Minnesota Wild looked incredible at the start of last season. Not many people expected them to get off to such a hot start, but at one point, it looked like they were going to run away with the Central Division. Not only did the Wild not win the division, they also suffered an ugly first-round exit at the hands of the St. Louis Blues, who took them down in just five games.
08/15/2017 08:41 PM Capitals Faceoff Podcast: Voice of the Capitals The days leading up to the expansion draft in June were jittery ones for Caps backup goalie Philipp Grubauer, who suspected there was a decent chance he’d get selected by the Golden Knights. “A little stressful,” Grubauer acknowledged Tuesday following an informal practice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. “We were on the phone every day or like every couple of minutes basically.” Being left somewhat in the dark was an nerve-racking experience, even for someone who makes a living dealing with stressful situations on the ice. “Nobody knew what was going on,” he said, referring to his camp’s attempts to figure out which direction Las Vegas GM George McPhee might chose. “We just kinda watched from Germany.”
08/15/2017 03:21 PM ESPN analyst ranks Flyers' farm system No. 1 in NHL Throughout the offseason, we'll ask questions about the Flyers to our resident hockey analysts and see what they have to say. Going End to End today are CSNPhilly.com reporters John Boruk, Tom Dougherty, Jordan Hall and Greg Paone. The topic: Expectations for Ivan Provorov in Year 2. Boruk "He's the best player I've ever played with by a mile." That was Nolan Patrick's assessment of Provorov following two seasons of junior hockey with the Brandon Wheat Kings. There's an indescribable maturity you quickly sense in talking with Provorov, and that mentality carries over onto the ice. Nineteen-year-olds simply don't grasp the speed, the decision-making, the mental grind and some of the other elements
08/15/2017 08:15 PM Fabbri’s on track to be ready by Blues training camp Barring setbacks in his continued rehab from an ACL injury that ended his 2016-17 season, Robby Fabbri expects to be ready by St. Louis Blues training camp, according to Chris Pinkert of the Blues website. Blues trainer Ray Barile understandably feared for the worst when he saw Fabbri go down.
08/16/2017 09:46 PM Butcher has talks with 5 NHL teams since becoming free agent Defenseman Will Butcher is attracting plenty of interest on his first day as an NHL free agent since college hockey's top player turned down an opportunity to sign with the Colorado Avalanche. The former University of Denver play had discussions with five teams on Wednesday, the player's agent Stephen Bartlett wrote in a text to The Associated Press. And, Bartlett added, he's scheduled to have talks with more teams over the next couple of days. Bartlett wouldn't reveal the entire list of teams, but did confirm he's had discussions with the Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils and expansion Vegas Golden Knights. The three teams were first mentioned in a report published by The Denver Post. The Avalanche
08/15/2017 06:49 PM Céline Dion just proved she's the most fun hockey mom Even world famous pop stars can turn into embarrassing, but delightful, sports parents sometimes. Earlier this week, mega famous super star Céline Dion attended her son Rene-Charles Angelil’s youth hockey game in Montreal. Like any good hockey parent, she got super into the game and not only cheered, but sang and danced in the stands. It’s delightful to watch. According to the Montreal Gazette, Dion’s son plays for the U16 Golden Knights in Las Vegas. Angélil was in town to play a friendly hockey game with the U16 Jr. Golden Knights. She was sporting a Golden Knights jersey with the number 5, and the name Angélil on the back. Despite living in Las Vegas mostly full time, the family still holds
08/16/2017 10:25 PM Alain Vigneault is excited to see what Anthony DeAngelo can bring Alain Vigneault said that he has only seen Anthony DeAngelo once but all of the people he has spoken with say that DeAngelo is "legit" and ready to "tale the next step." (NHL.com) Vigneault said that he has spoken about DeAngelo with Rangers GM Jeff Gorton, with the team's scouts as well as Newell Brown, his former assistant in Vancouver, who was with DeAngelo in Arizona last year. (NHL.com) He said that everyone he has spoken with says that DeAngelo will help the Rangers play their "quick north/south transition game" and on the PP. (NHL.com) Vigneault added that DeAngelo knows he will be with his third organization in the past three years and "he's got to make a name for himself. Everybody thinks
08/16/2017 06:58 PM Oilers sign center Leon Draisaitl to 8-year extension The two biggest cornerstones of the emerging Edmonton Oilers franchise are now locked up for the long haul. Six weeks after extending Connor McDavid for eight years and $100 million, the Oilers signed 21-year-old Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year contract with a sizable annual cap hit of $8.5 million. Paired primarily with McDavid, Draisaitl posted a career-best 77 points last season — eighth best in the NHL. He added another 16 points during Edmonton's first playoff run in more than a decade — separated, eventually, from the precocious Oilers captain. "I'm really excited to be back for eight years," Draisaitl told the Oilers website after the signing was announced. "I never really thought about
08/15/2017 05:07 PM Blues are locked into many salaries, but mostly in a good way When considering the future of the St. Louis Blues, especially looking at their Cap Friendly page, the immediate thought is that they’re really “locked in” to their current core group. J-Bo already reached the 1,000 games plateau, and he’s just 33.
08/16/2017 01:37 AM Prokhorov pressuring Islanders to play at Nassau Coliseum Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, looking to protect a $165 million investment in the Nassau Coliseum, is pressuring the New York Islanders to play a significant number of games at the Long Island arena in the 2018-2019 season, The Post has learned. Prokhorov, who owns Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, promised Nassau County that a professional hockey team would play at the recently renovated suburban arena — a promise that helped the billionaire’s Nassau Events Center in 2013 win a contract to manage the facility. But no professional hockey team now plays at the 13,900-seat Uniondale, NY, arena and local officials might move soon to hold Prokhorov’s NEC in default, sources tell The Post. Charles
08/15/2017 05:00 AM Artemi Panarin addresses his trade to Columbus in Q&A with Russian reporter A few months have passed since the Blackhawks made a pair of blockbuster moves that transfixed the hockey world on the morning of the 2017 NHL Draft, with much of the focus in Chicago centering on the return of Brandon Saad. Artemi Panarin hasn’t been heard from much since the deal went down, except for a tweet where he thanked the Blackhawks fans and organization. The language barrier probably didn’t help here, but that wasn’t an issue for Panarin when he sat down with Russian reporter Marat Safin for a lengthy Q&A that appeared online today. The two met in St. Petersburg, where Panarin has been training for the next NHL season and was awarded a trophy as Russia’s best player in the recent World Championships.
08/16/2017 06:01 PM 2017-18 Metropolitan Division Preview: Philadelphia Flyers Last season, the Metropolitan Division was the toughest in the NHL, producing the Stanley Cup champ, the regular season champ and three of the top four teams in the overall standings. Hows the division shaping up for 2017-18 after a summer of change for
08/15/2017 04:08 PM Morning Skate: Pastrnak is not going anywhere With little recent progress on the contract front for game-breaking right winger David Pastrnak, it would appear the hardball portion of negotiations have begun. NHL Network analyst and former Lightning GM Brian Lawton tweeted out on Monday he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Pastrnak is traded based on the current tenor of negotiations: This is coupled with rumor-peddler Eklund also mentioning on Monday that perhaps there's something cooking between the Bruins and Los Angeles Kings that would involve Pastrnak in a blockbuster summer deal. Take Eklund for what it’s worth, as always. But Lawton has deep, legitimate NHL sources and has been wholly accurate with reports similar to this one in the past.
08/15/2017 11:30 PM Eichel on Sabres: ‘We think we can be a playoff team’ With a cleaner bill of health, a management shakeup, and some off-season tweaks, the Buffalo Sabres stand as one of those tough teams to peg. “We think we can be really good,” Eichel said. “We think we can be a playoff team.
08/16/2017 03:47 PM Butcher an NHL free agent after not signing with Avalanche College hockey's top player is an NHL free agent after former University of Denver defenseman Will Butcher allowed a deadline to pass without signing with the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche selected Butcher in the fifth round of the 2013 draft and had until Tuesday to sign the Hobey Baker Award winner who led Denver to a national championship in April. A person with direct knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Butcher already has had talks with the Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils and NHL-expansion Vegas Golden Knights. The person said Butcher has not yet narrowed his list, and also is talking with other teams. The person spoke to the AP on the condition
08/15/2017 03:02 PM Is Kansas City a viable NHL expansion location? The NHL is going to add a team to the Western Conference at some point. The place with the Sprint Center, which opened in 2007 searching for an NHL team to play in the cold and 10 years later is happy to host Coldplay when they’re in town.
08/15/2017 05:30 PM Putting Sin City on ice: Golden Knights eager to turn Las Vegas into a hockey town In the western suburb of Summerlin, Nev., a planned community painted in hues of beige and brown and with a dizzying amount of roundabouts, there is an anonymous business park the Vegas Golden Knights temporarily call home. In the fall, they will move their operations into a nearly $30 million practice facility. For now, an office building 14 miles from the Las Vegas Strip is where the NHL hopes its next ice age dawns. When Kim Frank arrived in town last September as the team’s vice president of marketing, after working for the Washington Capitals and the Washington Wizards since 2007, the Golden Knights had a name but no identity. There was no logo. No uniforms. No players on the roster. Nothing
08/15/2017 04:00 PM This is the member of the Dallas Stars who has the most to gain -- or lose -- in the 2017-18 NHL season But, I honestly believe Ken Hitchcock has the most to gain or lose. This is his last coaching job. It can run one year or it can run five or more. The Stars very much want him to succeed and Hitch very much wants to make Dallas a winner. But if his approach flops this year, the leash will not be very long. I believe ownership wants a winner now, and the pressure is going to be on to make that happen quickly. Question: Is Jim Nill's seat a little warm? Heika: I've often said in this spot that Nill's contract runs through 2022-23, so there is no pressure, but I think the length of the contract isn't as much of a factor now. The Stars have one playoff series win in four seasons under Jim Nill and

08/15/2017 05:00 AM Philadelphia Flyers 25 Under 25: Robert Hagg finally appears to be ready for the NHL A little over four years ago, then-Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren made the command decision to infuse his organization with a jolt of much-needed young defensive talent. The move was understandable: the NHL blueline at the time was somewhere between barely-passable and a total mess, with no obvious high-end prospects forthcoming in the pipeline. Sure, Shayne Gostisbehere was in the organization (drafted in 2012), but he had yet to become Shayne Gostisbehere, and generally came with the reputation of an “intriguing sleeper” rather than that of a true blue-chip prospect. Samuel Morin was selected 11th, and at pick 41, Holmgren snapped up Robert Hagg, who had surprisingly fallen to round two.

08/16/2017 05:00 AM Top 25 Under 25, #13: Andreas Englund Since being drafted 40th overall in 2014, Andreas Englund has slowly moved his way up the Sens’ organizational depth chart (as well our Top 25 Under 25 list). Unless the Senators dramatically improve their depth on the blue line between now and the start of training camp, it’s not completely inconceivable that the young Swedish defenseman might spend a chunk of the upcoming season in the NHL. Englund did, after all, play five games for the parent club in 2016-17 and has generally been regarded as one of the best defensemen on the AHL squad. You can take these kinds of things for whatever you feel they’re worth, but Englund was named the Hardest Working Player at this year’s Development Camp; the Sens have typically bestowed this honour on a prospect they see as close to taking the next step.
08/15/2017 05:00 AM Top 25 Under 25: Number 10 Nicolas Petan Nicolas Petan is ranked tenth overall in Arctic Ice Hockey’s Top 25 Under 25 because of potential and potential only. The Winnipeg Jets forward has struggled to score at the NHL level, but he has also been saddled with Chris Thoburn so do not judge him too harshly. Petan still has the talent to be a skilled NHLer and had his moments last season. He now needs to make those moments more consistent and be able to show that he is capable of scoring in the NHL. Petan has the potential to play on a second or third line in the NHL and put up points, but that is only if he is put in a position to succeed by the coaching staff. Tim: It seems like a good chunk of Winnipeg Jets nation is ready to give up
08/15/2017 12:45 PM Ranking every NHL team by prospect pipeline Corey Pronman is ESPN's NHL Draft and Prospects analyst. He provides analysis on the top draft-eligible players, prospects drafted by NHL teams and all other relevant prospect information. He lives in New York. To kick off my coverage of the top prospects outside the NHL heading into the 2017-18 season, I begin with a ranking of each NHL team's organizational prospect depth, sometimes referred to as its farm system or pipeline. The state of the current NHL prospect crop is a little down after graduations from two great draft classes and a mediocre 2017 class. The two orgs that are nearly tied for first would have been around the No. 4-5 slot for me with the same group of talent in my 2016 farm
08/15/2017 05:00 AM Top 25 San Jose Sharks Under 25: Filip Sandberg is a potential fan favorite at No. 25 23-year-old Filip Sandberg has the makings of a future fan favorite. The 5-foot-9, 181 pound Swedish forward is known for his work ethic and intensity, as San Jose Sharks General Manager cited his “battle level” when the team signed Sandberg in May. Undrafted and undersized, Sandberg projects to be a third-or-fourth liner if he makes the NHL, McKeen’s Jimmy Hamrin told Dobber Prospects Radio in June. In that same interview, Hamrin said that Sandberg should start the season in the AHL. He’d be following the same route as fellow Swedish forwards Melker Karlsson and Marcus Sorensen, who finished their first professional season in North America in the NHL. That doesn’t automatically ensure success,
